Girl, Goddess, Queen X Suki Waterhouse

Girl, Goddess, Queen by Bea Fitzgerald is a really fun read! I am a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope, and it is done so well here. My one regret is reading this before sleep, because I could not put the thing down.

A feminist retelling of a Greek Myth, traditional gender roles are challenged, and we explore how misogyny affects both men and women. Main character, Persephone, a true girl’s girl, is far from besotted with Hades and is much more concerned with her own power as she grows into a force to be reckoned with. It is quite cathartic to go along with her for the ride, as she tears down toxic systems.

Still, this is a Romantasy after all, and there are plenty of swoon-worthy moments! This was actually the first young adult novel I read with a sex scene, and so naturally, I was interested in how the author handled this. Bea Fitzgerald navigated this scene so carefully, focusing more on emotions rather than delving into the graphic details.

The song that goes with this book has to be Devil I Know by Suki Waterhouse. This song could have been written by Persephone herself.
